The “Romance for String Quintet” was not originally conceived for a string quintet at all. A close cellist friend once asked me to write a piece for four cellos, and that is how the first version came into being. It was never performed, however.

Later, when a composition competition called for music for five string instruments, I remembered the piece and reworked it for this new instrumentation. Since then, it has continued to evolve into several further versions, including one for a larger orchestra and another with a more jazz-inspired character.

Yet throughout all of these transformations, the original melody and atmosphere remain at its core—sometimes unmistakably present, sometimes reimagined in a new and different form.
