ABOUT
The Theresienstadt concentration camp occupies an important, though often overlooked, place in the history of the Second World War. Initially established by the Nazis as a “transit camp” to Auschwitz, Theresienstadt developed a vibrant cultural life, fuelled by the many musicians, intellectuals and prominent figures who were deported to the camp.
Initially barely tolerated, the Nazi regime later recognised the possibility of exploiting Theresienstadt’s cultural life as a propaganda tool for its own purposes. The camp was presented as a model settlement, intended to show the outside world how well Jewish people were supposedly being treated under Nazi rule.
“Tanz auf den Gräbern” (“Dance on the Graves”) portrays life in the camp through numerous original documents from Theresienstadt, including diaries and letters, and commemorates forgotten Jewish artists who lived and worked there.
The project was supported by Fondation ZHdK, the Gamil Foundation and the Jakob and Werner Wyler Foundation.
