Tanz auf den Gräbern

Theatre with music

The Terezin concentration camp occupies an important, yet often overlooked, place in the history of World War II. Initially established by the Nazis as a "transit camp" to Auschwitz, Terezin developed a vibrant cultural life, enlivened and fueled by the numerous musicians, intellectuals, and celebrities deported to the camp.

Initially barely tolerated, the Nazi regime later discovered the potential to exploit Theresienstadt's cultural life as a propaganda tool for its own purposes. Thus, Theresienstadt was used as a showcase camp to show the outside world how well Jews were supposedly treated during Nazi rule.

"Dance on the Graves" depicts camp life using numerous original documents from Theresienstadt, such as diaries and letters, and commemorates forgotten Jewish artists who lived and worked in the camp.

The project was supported by the Fondation ZHdK, the Gamil Foundation and the Jakob and Werner Wyler Foundation.
